Activities in the Church Centre
The St. John’s Church Centre exists to serve the people of the Parish. It is a place where people can meet – some to worship God and to serve Jesus Christ, others to enjoy a wide range of social and community events or activities.
The following activities currently take place in the Church Centre:
Alcoholics Anonymous: AA meet on Thursday evenings from 8-10 p.m.
Asian Women’s Group: Council-run group on Wednesdays to Fridays from 1.30pm – 2.30/3.00pm. Contact: Kusum – Tel 020 8708 5200.
Banners Group: A group making banners for use in Church. Usually meets on the 1st Tuesday in the month from 7.30p.m.
Book Group: A group which meets to discuss a book the members have recently read. Meets quarterly on Thursdays from 8.00pm.
Blood Donors: The centre is used as one of the collection points for the National Blood Transfusion Service. Sessions are held on afternoons and evenings several times a year. If you are interested in becoming a donor, please contact the Blood Transfusion Service at their Brentwood office on 01277 223545.
Brownies: 5th Seven Kings Brownies meet each Wednesday from 6.00 to 7.30 p.m. for girls aged 7-10 years. Contact Natalie on 07903 372436.
Choir/Music Group: Contribute to leading worship in services at St Johns. The Choir rehearse on the first and second Thursdays of each month from 7.00pm and the Music Group on the third Thursday at 7.00pm. Contacts: Sue on 020 8590 8803 (Choir) & Margaret on 020 8599 0855 (Music Group).
Contact Centre: Contact is provided by the MU every Saturday morning.
Councillor Surgeries: Meet your local Newbury Ward councillor on 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month between 10am – 12pm. Contact: Dev – Tel 020 8708 9686.
Downshall Pre-School Playgroup: Provides quality care and education for children aged 2-5 years. With qualified and caring staff we follow the National Curriculum for the Foundation Stage. Children learn through play while having fun! Established in 1976, we are members of the Pre-School Learning Alliance. Open Monday – Friday during term time, 9.30am – 12.30pm. Friendship Group: Monthly social group – chat, games, music refreshments etc. Meets on the 3rd Monday of each month from 2.30 to 4 p.m. Contact: Jonathan on (020) 8599 2170.
Kumon Centre: The world famous Kumon Maths and English supplementary study programmes are available in Seven Kings on Mondays and Thursdays from 5pm – 7pm. Contact: Henna – Tel: 020 85542443 or Email: email@example.com.
Luncheon Club for Older People: Council-run Luncheon Club on Mondays to Fridays from 10.30am – 1.30pm. Contact: Kusum – Tel 020 8708 5200.
Meljon Singers: One of London’s most accomplished and enterprising vocal ensembles. Rehearsals on Fridays (7.30-10pm), with occasional longer Saturday rehearsals (10am-4pm) and rehearsals at concert venues in the afternoon before the concert. Contact: Secretary – firstname.lastname@example.org.
Mothers’ Union (MU): Membership is for those interested in affirming Christian Family Life. Quarterly branch meetings on Monday evenings plus other activities. Contact Christine on 020 8599 2170
Parent & Toddlers. Run by Downshall Pre-School Playgroup and open to all ages up to 5 year. £1.75 per session. Wednesday’s 1pm – 2.30pm. Contact: Marion – 07724 157213.
Redbridge Library Services: The Mobile Library has a site outside the St Johns Parish Centre on St Johns Road every Friday from 11.15am – 12.15pm.
Shine Stage School Dance Classes: Dance classes for all ages – beginners and experienced with optional annual exams and shows. Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz and Street. Exam presentations are made in September and an Annual show happens in April/May, often at the Broadway Theatre in Barking. Tuesdays from 4.30pm. Slimming World: Slimming World is a group to motivate and inspire women throughout a period of weight loss. Those attending get weighed weekly and keep track of their weight loss in a confidential and fun environment. Saturdays from 10am – 11.30am. Contact: Dolores – 020 8597 8641 / 07588 703758.
Sunday School (CYPECs): Stories, crafts, games and prizes on Sundays during term-time from 10am – 11am. Climbers (3-7 years), Explorers (7-10 years), Pathfinders (10-14 years). Upper Room available for under 5s (toys, plus sight & sound of the service). All-Age service on the third Sunday in each month.
YOG Classes: Get fit and have fun, learn to de-stress and relax with breathing techniques and postures. Tuesdays from 7.30pm and Saturdays from 8.30am. Suitable for all ages and abilities. Contact: Diksha – Tel 07534 512530.
Outside the Church we have developed a community garden incorporating artworks, benches, community noticeboard, remembrance garden and sensory planting. The community garden was developed with funding from Area 5 & 7 committees, Living Streets and London Over the Border. The community garden was opened by the Archdeacon of West Ham in May 2011 as part of a Community Information event held in the garden.
